Contractors in Florida who install, repair, or maintain pools, hot tubs, spas, hydromassage tubs, fountains, or related equipment can take this continuing education course to learn the electrical side of that specialty. Electricity in wet places must be handled with certain safety measures in place. This course covers the requirements for pool wiring, motors, pumps, heaters, luminaires, fans, receptacles, monitoring live voltage in water, and recent updates to the Florida Building Code about public swimming pools. The National Electric Code Handbook will be largely referenced.
To start our one hour course, we discuss the scope of electrical components in pools and similar constructs that electrical professionals will have to be familiar with. Then we'll examine wiring methods, including underground wiring locations, equipment rooms, corrosive environments, and having a means to disconnect the current flow to a system. Next is an overview of safety devices and related considerations, like cord-and-plug connected equipment and overhead conductor clearances.
The next sections deal with the hard components of these water features: motor function, pump types, water heater options for pools, and lighting, fan, and receptacle requirements. Where luminaires can be located and an analysis of wet, dry, and no-niche luminaires finish out the particulars of a pool’s electrical parts. The final two sections reveal updated requirements for handling repairs or alterations to public pools, and shock monitoring device options.
Videos and images are utilized throughout the course to enhance comprehension. After each lesson, students will be asked a single question about the material.
