Explore modern dwelling units from the perspective of a Georgia electrician. Learn the requirements of NEC 2023 for residential electrical service design with this course approved by the Division of Electrical Contractors of the State Construction Industry Licensing Board.

This course includes general code requirements and room-specific lessons for service design in residential dwelling units. Inside the home, you’ll cover everything from receptacle placement in bedrooms to lighting needs and switch placement in stairways.

Stay up to date with the most recent version of the NEC. This course highlights changes between the 2020 and 2023 edition of the National Electrical Code related to the design and installation of residential wiring.

At the completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • List minimum branch circuit requirements for each room of a dwelling unit
  • Describe receptacle outlet requirements for each room of a dwelling unit
  • Apply GFCI and AFCI protection requirements to each room of a dwelling unit
  • Explain tamper-resistant receptacle technology and identify where these receptacles are required in each room of a dwelling unit
  • Apply lighting outlet and control requirements to each room of a dwelling unit
  • Understand special equipment and system requirements common to dwelling units

Instructor Bio

Jerry Durham

Jerry previously served the state of North Carolina as a Level III electrical inspector and provided state-approved electrical training for electrical inspectors at both Alamance County and Guilford County (NC) Community Colleges. Jerry taught the Kentucky state-approved four-year electrical apprenticeship programs offered by the Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) Trade School and Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Trade School, and served the state of Kentucky as a Master Electrician and Louisville Metro Code Enforcement Officer. Jerry is a Certified Distance Education Instructor (CDEI) and NCCER Core and Electrical Curriculum certified instructor. Jerry currently holds North Carolina and ICC electrical inspector accreditations and is recognized by the state of Washington as an approved electrical administrator.
