This class presents every significant change made to Chapters 6 and 7 in the 2020 National Electrical Code® (NEC-2020).

Chapter 6 governs electrical connections to specialized equipment. Since this specialized equipment often sees the greatest innovation and most rapid changes of any in the electrical field, it also sees a host of NEC revisions during every code renewal cycle, including the 2017-2020 code review cycle.

We will cover 54 changes to Chapter 6 -- the greatest number of significant changes to any Chapter in the 2020 NEC. Then the course surveys the 10 changes to PV System codes such as those for circuit sizing, OCPD, rapid shutdowns, means of isolating equipment, identification, and grouping. The final set of changes looked at including new Mating Connectors for PV Systems, new minimums before GFP rules apply to PV Systems, a vital new informational graphic on large-scale PV systems, revised labeling for Fuel Cell Systems, and new selective coordination guidance for fire pumps.

Chapter 7 governs every condition that requires special considerations when it comes to electrical installations. This class presents 29 significant changes to Chapter 7 “Special Conditions”, the most varied Chapter in the NEC. This portion of the class begins the changes to the Articles on Emergency Systems and Optional Standby Systems, including guidance on incorporating alternative power sources. Followed by 13 changes to Articles 705 & 706, including a complete overhaul of Article 705 on Interconnected Electric Power Production Sources and new maintenance and identification protocols for Energy Storage Systems.

We finish up with a wide range of wiring systems adapted to special purposes, including a revision of Transfer Switch rules for Critical Operations Power Systems (COPS), updates to Articles 710 on Stand-Alone Systems and DC Microgrids; clarifications on the Use of Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 Remote-Control Signaling and Power-Limited Circuits, and three changes to Article 770 on OFC: Mechanical Execution of Work, Cable Routing Assemblies and Cable Trays, and Installation in Enclosures shared with energized conductors.
