This four-hour online course is designed to teach Minnesota plumbers about on-the-job safety standards.
Learning Objectives:
- Explain the relevance of this course in regard to workplace safety for professional plumbers.
- Identify the regulatory source(s) that provide safety standards for professional plumbers in the United States.
- Identify and discuss various OSHA regulations related specifically to workplace safety.
- Discuss hazardous substances that require special (regulated) treatment in the workplace to minimize environmental risks, including asbestos and lead.
- Recognize hazardous substances that may be encountered in the workplace, including those that can present environmental risks, such as adhesives, mercury, and various solvents.
- Describe workplace regulations for fire protection and prevention, as well as the proper treatment of flammable or combustible materials, specifically as they affect plumber safety.
- Identify substances commonly encountered in the field that pose a threat to health and safety, specifically hazardous gases such as hydrogen sulfide.
- Define “compliance,” as it relates to the duties owed to workers by their employers, the successful implementation of OSHA regulations for respiratory protection, and the creation (and implementation) of successful employee training and monitoring programs.
- Recognize potential biohazards that are common to the workplace (for professional plumbers), including human waste and rodent droppings, and use example approaches to handling these types of hazards to assess one's current approaches in the field.
- Identify workplace behaviors that reduce the chance of injury physical strains, and falls.
- Discuss workplace behaviors and conditions that may lead to injury, including exposure to extreme temperatures and excessive and/or long-term exposure to excessive noise; plan approaches to reduce harmful effects of exposure.
- Identify and explain workplace behaviors that reduce the chance of injury from burns (thermal shock and scalding), slips on wet surfaces, and falls.
- Discuss regulations concerning fire protection and prevention, as well as electrical hazards common to the workplaces, specifically as they affect plumber safety.
- Appraise general workplace safety rules for plumbers presented and discussed throughout this course, including specific OSHA regulatory standards and how they may be adapted.
