Minnesota Electrical License Renewal CE Requirements
Licensed Minnesota electrician renewal process
The DLI varies the amount of CE required for various electrical license renewals depending on the license level (you can see the details here). Generally, though, you’re looking at about 16 CE hours.
Master, journeyman, maintenance electricians, and Class B installers
These electricians need to complete 16 hours of continuing education with:
- 12 hours focused on the National Electrical Code (NEC) and
- Four non-code hours (You can take those last four hours on the code, too, if you prefer)
Master electricians must renew their licenses by February 28th of odd-numbered years.
License renewal deadlines for journeyman electricians are staggered.
After finishing your CE, don’t forget to submit your renewal application, send in the renewal fee, and cross off your other to-dos like renewing your business filing with the Secretary of State.
Minnesota electrical apprentice continuing education requirements
If you’re an apprentice, finding information on your specific Minnesota electrical continuing education requirements can be tricky. And that can leave you with questions. How many hours of continuing education do you need to renew your Minnesota electrical apprentice license? What continuing ed is required for your 2nd year of electric apprenticeship ? or your first, for that matter?
This gets more complicated because the DLI doesn’t list apprentices on their education requirements for electrical license renewal. But don’t worry. You technically fall in a category that is listed on that page.
Because you’re working as an unlicensed electrician, you fall into the last category (unlicensed electrician RE, RT):
- You need just two CE hours for your license renewal;
- Both hours need to focus on the NEC;
- Don’t forget to renew your license and pay the $19 renewal fee, too.
- Unlike licensed electricians, who get the benefit of a two-year renewal period, apprentices and other unlicensed electricians in Minnesota need to re-register with the state on a yearly basis. That means you need to complete your two CE hours and send in your renewal annually.
Ultimately, the CE required to renew an MN electrical license or your apprenticeship registration isn’t too strenuous, especially because you can take it online. But mark your calendar to make sure you don’t forget to complete your hours in time.
