CE Requirements to Renew an OK HVAC License

  • Complete 6 hours of continuing education every 3 years.
  • Obtain, complete, and mail a renewal application to the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board (CIB) with the appropriate renewal fees and any other required documentation.

If you work in HVAC in Oklahoma, you’re probably familiar with the Oklahoma CIB. They’re the entity that issued your mechanical license — and that you need to work with to keep your license active.

That means taking specific steps to renew your Oklahoma mechanical license at certain times. Here’s exactly what you need to do — including meeting the continuing education requirement — to renew your license on time.

Continuing education requirement for OK mechanical licensees

The CIB requires that both journeyman and contractor mechanical licensees take CE during each renewal cycle. This is pretty much the state’s way of making sure you’re staying in the know about best practices, safety protocols, and code updates.

Fortunately, you don’t need very many hours and you can take them online. Specifically, the CIB requires all mechanical licensees to take six hours of mechanical CE in order to be eligible for license renewal.

In order for your hours to count toward that requirement, you need to get them from a CIB-approved education provider. Look for the course ID number to double-check that any education provider you’re considering has the green light from the CIB.

When you choose to take your CIB-approved mechanical CE online, you get the freedom to work on your hours whenever you have free time. And you can do them from anywhere you want, provided you have a computer, tablet, or phone with internet.

Once you finish your course hours, your education provider should report your hours to the CIB for you.

How to renew your mechanical license

Once you get your CE done, you’re ready to send in the renewal form. Fill it out, include the required renewal fee, and send it to the state.

If you’re a journeyman, that’s all you need to do. But if you’re a contractor, you have a few extra steps

Additional to-dos for contractors

Contractors also need to include a copy of the continuing certificate for any bond or insurance that would have expired since their last renewal (remember, you need to maintain a $5,000 bond and $50,000 of commercial general liability insurance at all times).

To be eligible for renewal, contractors also need to make sure they’re aligning with the CIB’s apprentice requirements, meaning they can’t have more than three apprentices under them. And they need to keep their license properly displayed on their vehicles, plus all advertising, contracts, and bids.
