CE Requirements to Renew a UT Plumbers License

If you’re a licensed plumber in the state of Utah, you’ve got some work to do every two years. That’s because the Utah Department of Commerce Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL) lays out specific requirements in order to renew your plumbing license in every even-numbered year. You should receive a notice 60 days prior to renewal, but regardless, your license will still expire.

To keep your plumbing license active, here are the steps you need to take.

Step one: Complete your Utah plumbing continuing education

Per Utah Administrative Code, you need to complete 12 hours of continuing education during each renewal cycle if you have any of the following license types:

  • Master plumber
  • Journeyman plumber
  • Apprentice plumber
  • Residential journeyman plumber
  • Residential master plumber

Eight of your 12 CE hours have to be what the state calls core education, which is anything covering:

  • The International Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, and International Energy Conservation Codes, along with state building code
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training
  • The Americans with Disability Act
  • Medical gas, National Fire Protection Association Standards 13D and 54
  • Hydronics and wastewater treatment

The remaining four hours can cover core topics or professional topics such as:

  • energy conservation
  • new technology
  • plan reading
  • government regulations
  • management training
  • lien laws

The state requires contractors to take some in-person hours, but plumbers are off the hook. Fortunately, that means that you can get all of your CE, including the core hours, online. This gives you the freedom to take the hours whenever you have time. And you can chip away at them from any location that’s convenient. You just need an internet-connected computer, tablet, or phone.

Once you finish a plumbing CE course, we will report your hours to the state on your behalf.

Step two: Send in your license renewal and fee

Once you’ve got your CE done, it’s time to submit your renewal. You can use the DOPL’s license renewal system to do this online.  You’ll need your license number and renewal ID to get into the system.

If you don’t have a renewal ID, you’ll need to request one — but doing so should be relatively easy. You can use this online form to ask the DOPL for the ID you need. But because you can’t move forward without this piece, it can be helpful to start your renewal in early November so you have ample time to resolve any issues.

When you renew online, you’ll need to pay the applicable fee.
